A big success of the trip was being able to see our Great, great grandfather, Joseph Spencer's Big Brewery ! It was the Phoenix Brewery back in 1865. One whole block and 5 stories high of brick ! It now contains expensive Lofts and Condos. We were fortunate to be able to enter the building and see the inside. This is the beautiful entry and lobby.
To the left, is the old basement. Originally there was a spring there that was very handy for making the brew, and also where Joseph Spencer and Robert Liddell held boxing matches. It now contains a workout room for the residents.
Above center right, is the old Pittsburgh Jail, made of stone and is very beautiful Architecture..
We had catered dinner at Trinity Cathedral in the centre of the city. A very old Episcopal Church, beautiful inside and out. Cousin Mickey at the entrance. It is also the oldest burial grounds with many famous Pittsburgh pioneers.
Left is Mickey and Marlene at the Cathedral, middle is inside the church and to the right is cousin Robert Liddell 111, with his wife, attending to the Power Point show he ran for us about the Liddell and Spencer history. This was at the dinner in the Cathedral. Robert is quite the genealogist and is one of the few that stayed in PIttsburgh.
At the dinner, cousin Ann and another Liddell cousin , in the middle is Ann and myself behind the 2 oldest descendants of the group. Albert Gallitan Liddell 11 and Dorthea Liddell. Both of these are in the Albert Liddell family, one of the sons of Joseph and Maria .To the right is our last picture of the downtown Pittsburgh. We especially liked the building with the red roof. We had a very wonderful trip, fast, 2 days on the plane and one full day in Pittsburgh, but did everything for the Bicentennial. What we also found that all the members of the Liddell family are very kind and caring. We were so glad to meet and get to know them.
