CAPERS everywhere,
sort of like weeds here, but these are beautiful bushes, growing anywhere
with no water, a blossom like an orchid and the caper fruit, looks like
a small bean. We were picking them whenever we were in the country. Pietro,
to the right, brought back some for Pina for food. We also took sone home
to U.S. Wild garlic behind the capers. |

We got to witness the harvest of the Lentil beans of Ustica, they are
small and called Lenticci. The reaper is a 1910 model, been here since
then. The harvest was from the Longo farm, with hired help from all over
Ustica, even the Butcher was helping. The 2 pictures to the left are the
beans being separated from the dried brush, and the 2 on the right, the
end of the reaper that shoots out the brush for baling.
A person could live on the wild things in Ustica. There was the Capers, wild
garlic, wild berries, and of course rabbits and fish galore.

Our visit
to the Museum of Ustica was very informative and astounding !!! The pottery
and ceramic relics dating back to the Neolithic and Bronze ages are numerous
! These were discovered in the prehistoric village and also in some of the
ocean grottos. Most of these discoveries started in 1970s. |

The museum
has 2 buildings, the one is for the findings from the Roman Hellenistic
age (above). Its relics are mostly of iron or stone,alot of voltives and
plates. These steps(above right)go down deep into a rock cave, under the
museum. It was the famous cave called"the Fosso." It was a prison,
dug into the volcanic tuffa, wet, no light or air. Mostly for political
prisoners from the 1700's thru early 20th century.Used during the rule of
Mussolini. The most famous prisoner was Antonio Gramsci, in 1925. He was
in the prison 5 years. He was first a Marxist, then became the leader and
founder of the Communist party in Italy. |

Here is a peaceful picture taken from the Falconiera, the high point of the
Roman settlement, looking toward the other port for the ferry boats that bring
supplies, cars, etc. The land past the boat is the site of the Bronze Age Village.
As you can see, Tom and Marlene had a very successful viaggio in Ustica. Friends,
food, family, and history !!! A touch of Paradise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
