Sicily 2010, The Last Day

The beach here is very beautiful. Clear blue water, usually calm. Although you don't see much swimming in Sicily, here you do see people in the water. I didn't have my bathing suit with me, I was tempted to go in with my clothes on. On our trip in 2003, I did get to have a nice swim here.
Cefula is sort of the La Jolla of Sicily. Quite an expensive vacation spot for the locals and also tourists. Beautiful medieval town started by the Greeks and then later ruled by in the 1100's by the Norman King Roger 11.
On our last day of the trip, the family of Fabio Pavone, brother of San Diego friend, Maurizio, picked us up and drove us to Cefula. Here is Fabio's wife Marisa, 2 yr. old daughter Clara, Tom, their 11 yr. old son Giovanni and Fabio.
Here I am with the Pavone's. We walked thru the pretty and clean town We stopped at a very busy place for Gelato.A favorite in Sicily is a Brioche con Gelato, a Gelato sandwich. Tom tried one, he said it was really good.
We stopped at the Lavatorio Medievale - the old Wash House. The fresh water ran to the sea here and the women would wash their clothes at these stalls. Everyone likes to get their picture taken here.
In Sicily, everyone loves Gelato ! and these 2 are no exception ! Giovanni and Clara look like they are dreaming of the minute Dad lets them get some. Gelatos and the beach are Clara's favorite things.
After Cefula, Fabio took us to his hometown, Miselmeri, in the countryside of Palermo. We went to his mother's house, and she had a lovely spread of Pizza from a local store and fava beans.
Here is Fabio with daughter Clara, She is playing at the table waiting for dinner.She has the most beautiful big eyes. The pizza was the best we had tasted and the home cooked Fava beans were wonderful. Tom and I almost ate them all !!
It was dark as we left Miselmeri to return to the hotel in Palermo. Here is their holiday lights up for the beginning of Festa di Santa Maria the next day.We were not able to go to their Castle built by the Saracens in the1100's
Well, here I am starting the many miles home. This is the Palermo Airport, we had no delays or long layovers going home.
Before going to Cefalu, we had time to go to the Capuchin Catacombs. 8000 Friars and important people were entombed here from 1599 thru 1871.Amazing embalming procedure keeps the dead almost looking alive. Capuchin Catacombs
Our Alitalia plane to take us to Rome, then home. We both praised God for such a great adventure and successful trip, and for our safe return. Ron surprised us by bringing all the children to the Orange County Airport to greet Dad. What a cute sight.
