Ustica Potpurri

Arrivederci

The sea around the Island is so clear, clean and beautiful. Had to get my feet in. The Usticesi don''t swim until after the 1st of June, so we were a few days early. If I lived there, I would change that custom.
Laurie and I with Salvatore Militello, who runs the Siremar office in town, and most of the smaller boats. He was a big help to us in getting tickets to Ustica. Saved us trying to find the office in Palermo.
Here we are with one of the handsome and good fishermen of Ustica. I think Pietro had bought the fish we enjoyed, from him.
I finally got to meet with the centarian of Ustica, Pasqualino Palmisano !! What a sweet man, and not a wrinkle in his face. It must be those healthy Lenticchie beans he grows on his farm !!
The Isola di Ustica !! Such a beautiful site !! We have really felt at home here, and received such a welcome from all.
Here is the first church of Ustica, possibly from the late 1700's. Made out of rock and still standing. It may be restored in the future.
Pietro and Mario's friend Giovanni Martucci entertains with the accordian. He did mostly good old American songs. I couldn't sit still, had to do the jig.
Starting from the left -- Pietro Bertucci, Guiseppe Giordano, me and cousin Rosa Salerno. Guiseppe (Pippo) is the man that Tom and I, back in 2010, talked to in his garden when we were sort of lost. He was very kind to us and friendly. Pietro arranged for him to come to the Piazza and meet with us. Another surprise !!!
Here we met up with some fishermen. Pietro knew them. The one in the middle had come from another place.for the baby baptism that night. He was a relative of that family.
Here is Pina and Pietro with big smiles,in front of their house!
Well, here I am for the last time at the home of the Bertucci's. I really liked the house and neighborhood. Everything so close !! They have a "Wonderful Life" here. They were so gracious to host us both for the 5 days.
This is the captain of the Ferry we took from Ustica back to Palermo.Pietro knows all these important people and they all like him.
Arrivederci Ustica, it was the best part of our vacation !! We will miss all the lovely people, our hospitable cousins, and the relaxing and healthy lifestyle of the Island.
